Gallery

For the second time the Festival Gallery moves from Teatr BOTO to a virtual space. We present pictures by Iwona Bandzarewicz and Paweł Wróblewski, and photographs by Karolina Trapp (from various corners of the world) and by Jerzy Bartkowski (from Sopot). We also present material emerging from the student project supported by the Between.Pomiędzy Foundation entitled “Nowy Świat” (New World) conducted at Kolonia Sztuki in Gdańsk. We hope we’ll be able to invite you in the coming months to more familiar cultural sites for exhibitions of these artists connected with our Festival.

Karolina Trapp: „Colorful Streets”

In 1952, Henri Cartier-Bresson, a founding father of the Magnum Agency, put forward his concept of “the decisive moment” – a concept that proved most seminal and fundamental for street photography. It is that very special moment when all elements of an observed scene come together in synergistically meaningful relationships, offering maximum harmony and/or tension, so that the captured frame fulfils its structural potential. A photograph is, after all, all about a moment – a freezing in time of what is essentially temporary and fleeting. And especially so, perhaps, for a street photographer, who focuses on capturing candid moments as suddenly a story unfolds, in a split of a second and, unless we capture it, a second later it’s already gone.

My ongoing series Colorful Streets explores life in the present-day big city through the eyes of a street photographer. It is a collection of moments, or, perhaps one could say, intersections between time and space. The relationship between the subject and the setting becomes an essential part of the story and so does the play of other juxtapositions, echoes and rhythms, color and form, perspective and point of view. All the images presented here were taken in the years 2017-2021 in various cities across the USA and Europe.

Karolina Trapp is a Polish-Australian street photographer currently based in Seattle, USA. An English-literature academic by profession, Karolina’s interest in street photography was born at the turn of 2015 and 2016 when she moved across the ocean and started exploring her new city. Since that time, her images have garnered recognition at prestigious photography competitions and been exhibited in the USA, Europe and Australia. Her work can be found in numerous photography magazines and books, such as Women Street Photographers or World Street Photography. The latest collection of literary essays by the renowned Turkish writer Mustafa Kutlu features her image on its cover.
